In second place, just a stroke back at 69, is Reno resident David Nelson. Nelson, who made it to match play at this year’s U.S. Senior Amateur, penciled in five birdies and three bogeys.

Three players—former multiple NCGA Senior Player of the Year winner Jim Knoll, Newbury Park resident Rob Campbell and Canyon Lake’s Robert Funk—are T-3 at 71. Knoll won the title in 2012 at San Gabriel CC.

Defending champ Jeff Wilson is T-20 after an opening 76.

In the annual North/South Senior Challenge, which pits three of the NCGA’s best players against three players from the SCGA (best two-out-of-three), the SCGA leads, 149-151. The SCGA team’s scores were Craig Davis (74), Don Dubois (75) and John Mack (76). Team NCGA is being represented by Senior Player of the Year Randy Haag (74), 2018 Senior POY Jeff Wilson (75) and 2019 NCGA Senior winner Mike Rowley (79).

ABOUT THE California Senior Amateur

The California Senior Amateur Championship began in the fall of 1992, and is the state championship for players age 55 and over. The first two tournaments were played at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. In 1994, the event was moved to Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, and in 1995, a simultaneous NCGA vs. SCGA team portion of the championship was added. Starting in 2010 this 54-hole stroke play championship will rotate to selected courses throughout the state. Players must have an index of 7.4 or less and may attempt to qualify at any location in the state.
