Alexa Pano is in command at The Sally (Golfweek photo)
She was one of the stars of the junior golf focused movie "The Short Game" and now Alexa Pano is competing against collegiate players, and beating them.
Today Pano fired 72 to take the 54-hole Sally lead by four shots over defending champ Amanda Doherty. 2017 champ Emilia Migliaccio is in third.
SECOND ROUND RECAP
Alexa Pano (Lake Worth, FL) rose to the top of the leaderboard today at The Women's South Atlantic Amateur (The Sally) with a steady round of 1-under 71.
While first round leader (and 2018 champion) Emilia Migliaccio (67-77) and 2019 champion Amanda Doherty (69-75) struggled at Oceanside Country Club, Pano moved to the top and is trailed by Alexis Florio, who fired the low round of the day (68) to stand alone in second place at 2-under 142.
Migliaccio is tied with three other players at even par 144.
ROUND 1 RECAP
Emilia Migliaccio fired 5-under 67 to take a one shot lead over Alexa Pano after the first round of the Women's South Atlantic Amateur (The Sally) at Oceanside Country Club.
The Wake Forest Junior (and two-timer Palmer Cup Women's Team member) won The Sally in 2018 during a cold spell the likes of which had golfers wearing their warmest winter gear. She faced none of those conditions today, as temperatures held in the low 60s.
The rest of the week will be even more Florida-like, as 70s and even low 80s will be the norm at the historic course that dates back to 1907.
Migliaccio is trailed by one of the best-known players in the field, the phenom named Alexa Pano. At just 15 years old, Pano has played what would amount to a lifetime of amateur golfer for most golfers, including an appearance at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur in April of last year, after winning the Dixie Women's Amateur in 2018.
Pano fired 68 today, a shot back of Migliaccio. And right there in the hunt at 69 is defending champ Amanda Doherty who outplayed Pano for The Sally title in 2019.
It should be an exciting week on Florida's Atlantic Coast.
