Amateur golf continued its return from the coronavirus shutdown over Memorial Day weekend, with a dozen or so tournaments played across the United States and more to come in the days and weeks ahead.
In Montana, the Barnett Memorial Tournament was played in Missoula. Garrett Woodin (Billings, Montana) won the event, shooting a 204 through three days.
Woodin, a senior on the 2019-20 Montana State University Billings men’s golf team, opened the tournament with a one-under-par 70. In the second round on Sunday, Woodin set a new career tournament-best with a 5-under 66. (His previous best was a 68 at the Western New Mexico Invite in 2017.) Closing the door on Memorial Day with a 3-under 68, Woodin bested his opponents by a total of five shots.
Joey Lovell posted the low-score of the tournament with a 65 on Sunday. He bookended the stellar performance with a pair of even par rounds to finish in solo second behind Woodin at 4-under.
Bob Hasquet (3-under 210) and Ben Kaul (1-under 212) rounded out those who finished under par.
WOMEN'S DIVISION
Recent University of Montana grad Avery Teigan posted a pair of 73s in the first two rounds and closed with a 77 to win by three over Morgan O'Neil. Things got a little shaky for Teigan down the stretch on Monday - she made bogey on No. 16 and doubled the par-3 17th. But a birdie at the par-5 18th got the job done.
