The Byron Nelson Award presented by Srixon/Cleveland Golf recognizes the top graduating senior in all of men’s collegiate golf who demonstrates high academics, a high level of play, as well as good character and integrity throughout their entire collegiate career. The award embodies the characteristics portrayed by Nelson throughout his life and career in golf.
This year’s Byron Nelson recipient is Louisville’s John Murphy. Murphy, a Kinsale, Ireland native, is the first-ever recipient of the Byron Nelson Award from Louisville.
A two-time PING All-Region and ACC All-Academic team member, Murphy improved on his 71.72 stroke average in 2018-19 (second on the team) with a school-record 69.59 stroke average in his senior campaign. He was also named a 2020 PING honorable mention All-American and a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
One of three finalists, Murphy was awarded the honor over Baylor’s Colin Kober and Tyler Strafaci of Georgia Tech.
