Incoming North Carolina freshman Peter Fountain has had quite the summer.

Finishing second at the North Carolina Open earlier in the month, Fountain found himself in the winner’s circle at the North Carolina Amateur Championship.

With pedestrian rounds of 69 and 70 through 36 holes, Fountain made up shots against the field with a third-round 64 tying the low round of the tournament. In with a 33 and out in 31, Fountain carded a bogey-free third round, putting him in the mix for an eventful final round.

Heading into the final round, Fountain was one shot behind James Madison University senior Walker Cress. Posting a 2-over 72 on Saturday, Cress could not overcome a 1-over front nine as he slid from the lead to finish T-3.

Fountain’s final round 68 was not quite enough to claim the victory. After going bogey, par to finish, Fountain headed to a playoff with UNC Greensboro graduate and Oklahoma transfer Jonathan Brightwell who birdied 18 to force extra holes.

Fountain made quick work of Brightwell winning the playoff on the first hole with a par after Brightwell had to punch out on his knees to scramble for bogey.

“This win definitely gives me a lot of confidence going forward,” Fountain told Carolinas Golf Association. “To be able to compete in a field like this, one of the strongest fields I will play in this summer and win it means a lot.”
