Consistent improvement. That is what it will take to win the 114th Southern Amateur at Maridoe Country Club.
William Mouw has followed that blueprint to a tee as he took the solo lead after two days of play. The Pepperdine sophomore carded a second-round 67, improving on his opening 69 that earned him a co-leader moniker at the conclusion of Wednesday’s round.
Mouw started hot before the Texas heat kicked in. Teeing off at 8:00 am, he tallied four birdies on his first seven holes to go out in 32. Without a stumble for 13 holes, Mouw carded his first bogey of the day on No. 14, his lone bogey on the day. Immediately fixing his mistake, Mouw circled two straight birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to settle in with a 5-under 67.
Overnight first-round co-leader Aman Gupta did not have near the fortune Mouw had on Thursday. The Oklahoma State Cowboy posted a 4-over 76 to fall from a tie for first, to a tie for 24th.
Gupta’s Big 12 foes from Austin, Texas had a big day on Thursday.
The Coody brothers, Parker and Pierceson made big moves during the second round. Parker Coody improved his opening 70 with a 68 to move into solo third. Pierceson tied the low-round of the day to get to red numbers with a 67. He begins Friday’s round at 1-under in a tie for 12th.
UT star Cole Hammer matched Pierceson Coody with a 67 to move into a tie for sixth. Rising sophomore Travis Vick shot a 68 to move to 4-under on the tournament and slides into a tie for fourth. Of the five Longhorns in the event, Will Thomson was the only one to miss the cut.
Defending champion AJ Ott will not get the opportunity to play on the weekend as he was unable to overcome a 5-over first round. Tallying a second round 73, Ott missed the weekend by a stoke.
The same cannot be said for the 2020 Maridoe Junior champions, Michael Brennan. His back-to-back 73s were enough to make the cut by four shots. He will be looking to make some moves up the leaderboard on Friday.
Round three will begin at 7:00 am, make sure to follow @AmateurGolf and @Brayden_AG on Twitter for updates throughout the day.
