Chris Francoeur rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole to walk off with the 53rd Ouimet Memorial Tournament at Woodland Golf Club.

The University of Rhode Island junior edged out mid-amateur Nick Maccario, who was one group ahead of Francoeur and posted a 5-under 66 to get into the clubhouse at 9 under par for the tournament.

For Maccario, it was the third-straight runner-up finish, an agonizing but impressive stretch of golf. Maccario previously finished second in both the Massachusetts and New England Amateurs.

Out in 35, Francoeur had to make something happen on the back nine if he wanted to have a shot at the win. Making birdies on 11, 12, and 14, Francoeur stumbled with a bogey on the par-3 15th before making birdies on 17 and 18.

The duo’s pair of 66s matched Matt Parziale’s final round for low rounds of the tournament. Parziale finished the event in a tie for ninth at 1 under (214).

Junior golfer Joseph Lenane took third place honors with a 6-under, 209 total. Mid-am Kyle Tibbetts secured a fourth-place finish at 5 under (210). Brett Krekorian (Limestone) and Timothy Umphrey (UConn) shared fifth place, finishing the event at 4 under (211).

ABOUT THE Francis Ouimet Memorial

This 54-hole stroke play tournament honors Francis Ouimet, considered America's First Golf Hero and one of the most important figures in the history of golf. His victory in the 1913 U.S. Open in a stunning playoff upset of Harry Vardon and Ted Ray is viewed as the turning point in American Golf. The event, first played in 1968, one year after Ouimet's death, is held at three top Boston-area courses, with the final round always taking place at the 6,721 yard Woodland Golf Club (Mr. Ouimet's home course). The most notable winner to date is Brad Faxon, who captured the 1980 event. There are three divisions: Men, Women, and Senior.
