Squaring off with his former Temple University teammate Paul Rogowicz, the two were able to take a one/two finish. With the win, Fieger becomes the first player since the GAP Senior Am trophy namesake Allan Sussel did so in 1985-86.

“That’s good company,” the 57-year-old Denver, Pa. native told the GAP. “My brother Gene was very good friends with Allan. I know that Allan gave me a set of his Wilson Tour Blades when I was in college. I think I caddied for him a time or two, but I never had a chance to play golf with him. That’s my recollection [of Allan Sussel]. It was almost 40 years ago.”

Fieger also becomes the fourth player to win both the Pennsylvania Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship and the GAP Senior Amateur Championship in the same year.

Taking a one stroke lead over Rogowicz, Fieger got off to a hot start to further lengthen his lead. Growing his lead to three strokes following the par 4 11th, Fieger’s roll was slowed a bit as the pair came down the stretch.

Three-putting the 146-yard par 3 14th, Fieger got back to the basics quickly, logging a two put on the 17th. On the closing hole, Fieger crushed his drive on the 387-yard par 4, leaving just 99 yards to the hole.

“I hit all 18 greens, and yesterday I hit 16 greens,” Fieger said. “So, 34 out of 36 greens was my plan. And if I didn’t pull out wrong clubs, then I would’ve hit 18 greens yesterday too. That’s my strength. I drive it fairly straight. I hit greens.”

Leaving little to no doubt in his mind, Fieger knocked his 54-degree wedge to just nine feet en route to the three stroke championship win.
