What do you get when you put one of the most decorated amateur golfers in the history of California competitive golf on a course he knows like the back of his hand?

A runaway victory.

Tim Hogarth won the Pasadena City Senior title by 11 strokes today, and that margin was all made in the final round.

Playing the 36-hole event over the two courses at Brookside Golf Club -- in the shadow of the Rose Bowl -- Hogarth started the day the final round tied with the relatively unheralded Jordan Fisher of Oakmont Country Club. (The Oakmont in nearby Glendale, not the more famous one in Pennsylvania).

Both players shot rounds of 6-under 64 at the E.O. Nay course on Thursday, doing some serious scoring on the final holes. Hogarth finished his round eagle-birdie-birdie, while Fisher had a eagle-birdie-eagle run from holes 14-16.

Neil Moore, playing his home course, kept the pair in sight with 68, and Iain Macdonald of Industry Hills fired 69. A pair of golfers at 70 included Dennis Martin and Craig Calkins, winner of last year's Morrison Cup at Pauma Valley.

But the E.O. Nay course measures just over 6,000 yards -- the final round is played at it's next door neighbor, named for C.W. Koiner and measuring over 7,000 yards.

By the time the first third of the final round had been completed, Hogarth's sprint to the finish was more than a tortoise and hare story. He birdied three of the first six holes, to take a four shot lead, as Fisher recoded three-straight bogeys on Nos. 2-5 and a birdie on No. 6 to keep Hogarth's lead reasonable.

But Hogarth showed no signs of letting up, making five birdies against two bogeys on the back nine for a 5-under 67 as Fisher slid to a 78. Only one player in the field besides Hogarth -- Goran Hagegard of Annandale GC at 71 -- was able to post a red number on Friday.

For his part, Fisher was able to witness first hand the way Tim Hogarth picks his way around a difficult golf course, playing safe when needed, getting up-and-down when he needs to, and attacking the flag whenever possible. (And yes, he can putt.)

Fisher tied for second with Brookside's Neil Moore at even par 142, while Craig Calkins finished fourth at 143. A trio of players tied for fifth at 144 -- Mark C. Miller and Dennis Martin (both of Brookside) and Iain Macdonald of Industry Hills.

Players managed to stay safe from not only Covid-19- but the poor air quality brought on by the wildfires that have ravaged California. (Note the photo above.)
