Savannah Quarters Senior: Valuck, Fritz take titles

It took two extra holes to settle the score today at the Savannah Quarters Senior Invitational.

After Jonathan Valuck of Oklahoma City, OK tied Richard Kerper of Oldsmar, FL at 1-over 217 for the 54-hole championship, the pair headed out for extra holes. Valuck, who has regularly finished in the top 50 in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings, hasn't won a major senior event since picking up the title at the Society of Seniors Founders Cup in 2018.

But he consistently records top finishes, and today's win validates the trajectory his game is on.

Entering the final round six shots behind Kerper -- who posted a tournament low 66 in the second round -- Valuck took charge with three straight bogeys on hole Nos. 11-13. A bogey on the 18th hole prevented Valuck from winning outright but his final round of 70 was still the best of the day by three shots.

In the Super Senior division, John Fritz of Mint Hill, SC also posted 1-over for the event, and passed second round leader Al Small, who finished runner-up.

The Savannah Quarters Senior Invitational was the second major event to be contested at the club this year; the Savannah Quarters Invitational drew a top drawer, mostly collegiate field when it was played in July.

While the course saw heavy rains from Hurricane Sally, the agronomy team lead by Mr. Steven Hendrix put in substantial time and effort, resulting in excellent conditions despite the rain.
