Jordan Doull shot a 4-under 66 to pull into a tie for the lead with one round to go at the 17th St. Augustine Amateur at St. Johns Golf Club in Elkton, Fla.

Doull, a junior at Columbus State who hails from western Australia, made seven birdies on the day. After suffering a double-bogey on the par-4 13th hole, he rebounded with three birdies over the last five holes to get to 7-under 133.

Cody Carroll, a junior at the University of North Florida, was looking to replicate his first-round 4-under 66, going bogey-free until the final hole when his lone dropped shot gave him a 67.

Carroll and his UNF teammate Nick Gabrelcik shared the lead after the first round. Gabrelcik, who won the New Year's Invitational by seven shots earlier this year, was one shot back of the lead but double-bogeyed the last hole to fall to 5 under, two shots back.

Sam Anderson of the University of Wisconsin had the round of the day, a 5-under 65, to move into a tie for 4th at 4 under. He is tied with Sampson Zheng of Cal-Berkeley, Mauro Baez of Flagler College, and Kyle DeCenzo of Florida Tech.

The defending champion, Ty Gingerich of the University of Cincinnati, also made a move on Saturday, going bogey-free with a 67 to get into the top 10 at 1 under.

ROUND ONE RECAP

University of North Florida teammates Nick Gabrelcik and Cody Carroll each shot 4-under 66 to share the first round lead at the 17th annual St. Augustine Amateur at St. Johns Golf Club in Elkton, Fla.

Carroll, a junior at UNF, made 6 birdies against two bogeys, highlighted by three in a row starting at the 11th. Gabrelcik, a freshman, made five birdies against a single bogey.

Gabrelcik started the year with a seven-shot win at the New Year's Invitational in St. Petersburg, while Carroll has been close to victory himself, finishing runner-up at the First Coast Amateur at nearby Palm Coast and last year's Shoal Creek Spring Intercollegiate.

The pair top a crowded leaderboard, with five players just one shot back at 67 and a total of 20 players at par or better with two rounds remaining.

The group of five at 67 reflects the international flavor of the field, with Mauro Baez of Argentina, Jordan Doull of Australia, and Josef Hacker of England joining Floridians Kyle Decenzo and Sam Nicholson.

Last year's St. Augustine Amateur champion, Ty Gingerich of Carmel, Ind., and the University of Cincinnati, opened his tournament with a 2-over 72, tied for 31st but still within reach, only six shots back of the lead.

The low mid-amateur is Peter Tomlinson of Seymour, Ct., who shot a 1-over 71 and sits tied for 21st.
