We all know now that the Big 10, along with the Pac-12, ACC, and numerous Division-II and Group of Five conferences have canceled the fall golf schedule and will attempt to play in the spring. We also know that there are an abundance of collegiate tours providing an outlet for those left in the dark by their school or conference to keep their game in tournament shape while they wait hopefully for a spring season.
These tournaments are providing a deeper look into who is who in the ever so deep talent pool that is collegiate golf.
This week’s new name? Adrien Dumont de Chassart. The Illinois junior out of Belgium dominated Kampan Golf Course in West Lafayette, Indiana at the Golfweek Purdue Men’s Amateur.
Bidding his time, Dumont de Chassart started off with an even-par 72 in Saturday’s first round. Heading back out in the afternoon, the Fighting Illini golfer gained momentum with a 5-under 67, one shot back of Indiana’s Mitch Davis.
Coming back Sunday to a course where both low and high scores were possibilities, Dumont de Chassart picked up right where he left off on Saturday afternoon.
“Today one of my goals was to play a bogey-free card again and that’s what I did,” Dumont de Chassart told Golfweek’s, Julie Williams. “I played two tournaments before this one. I played pretty good in one, struggled in the other one and made some good adjustments before this one and it paid off.”
With just three bogeys for the entire tournament (all came in the first round), Dumont de Chassart was consistently great over his final 36 holes. Birdies on Nos. 1, 6, 10, and 11 gave him a stress-free 4-under 68 while his nearest challengers could muster no more than 2-under 70.
Farther back in the pack that was chasing the Belgian was fellow Illinois teammate Michael Feagles. The Arizona native was two over par to begin the final round and had the low round of the day Sunday with a 5-under 67. Unable to catch up to his teammate, Feagles settled for a solid T-7 (-3) finish, six shots off of Dumont de Chassart’s mark.
Taking a tie for second was Illinois’ Nico Lang and Northwestern’s James Imai who both tallied 5-under, 211 totals.
In the women’s division, the ladies made their mark on the sister course to Kampan GC; Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
Taking the title there was Louisville’s Lauren Hartlage.
Following rounds of 4-under 68 and 5-under 67 on Saturday, the Cardinal graduate senior was able to hold onto her lead by the slimmest of margins with a 2-over 73 on Sunday.
Simply unable to get anything rolling, Hartlage went out in 37 (+1) with a lone bogey on the par-4 4th. Coming away with par on the next 10 holes, Hartlage stumbled once again with a crucial bogey on another par-4; the 15th. Awakening somewhat with a birdie on No. 16, she gave the shot right back on No. 17 before escaping with a par on No. 18 to claim the win by a single stroke.
Irene Kim (Northwestern) matched her four bogeys on the day with four birdies for a final round 72 and a 6-under 210 tournament total. Duke’s Erica Sheperd and fellow Louisville Cardinal Lauren Thibodeau claimed shares of third place at 3-under 210.
