GCAA Am Series: Casey Leebrick grabs win in California

Sophomore transfer Casey Leebrick rode three sub-70 rounds to a victory at St. Mark Club in Lake San Marcos, California over the weekend.

The Sacramento State transfer carded rounds of 67-64-68 to claim a two-stroke victory over surging Santa Clara freshman, Jack Avrit.

Leebrick found 16 birdies and two eagles throughout the 54-hole tournament to turn in a three day total of 14-under, 199. Tied alongside Jack Rahon (Seattle) at 11 under through 36 holes, Leebrick immediately went to work with his first birdie of the week on the 310-yard par-4 1st.

Going out in 35 (-13), Leebrick was four under on the day before tripping up on the par-5 12th as he came away with bogey. Knocking down pars until he reached the par-4 16th where he made birdie, Leebrick gave those trailing him the slightest bit of hope on the penultimate hole.

At 210-yards, the 17th at St. Mark Club is the longest of the five par-3s on the property. With large bunkers protecting the right side of the green and water looming on the front left edge, the shot can be intimidating from the tips.

Leebrick came away with a double-bogey and just a two shot lead with one hole to play. Not the slimmest of margins, but still not a feeling you would want while heading to the final hole of a tournament.

Unphased by the mistake, Leebrick carded his sixth and final birdie of the day on No. 18 for a final round 3-under 68, and the championship.
