Rescigno rides 63 to victory at the 2020 Gobbler
Scott Riscigno (New Mexico State)
Nearly 20 golfers were within four shots of the lead heading into the final round of the 2020 Gobbler Amateur on Wednesday. Three golfers were tied for the lead, but all three failed to close the deal thanks to the hot hand of an Aggie.
Scott Rescigno, a sophomore at New Mexico State, was simply lights out on Wednesday.
Following rounds of even-par 71, and 2-over 73, Rescigno turned on the afterburners to start the final round. The Aggie sophomore began his day with five birdies to begin his round to quickly drop from two over, to three under before the leaders even teed off.
The hot start resulted in a #59Watch at Sewallo Golf Club. Capping off the front side with his sixth birdie of the day, Rescigno kept his head down and moved onto the back nine. Playing the first five holes of the back nine at five over for the week, Rescigno stayed steady as he played the stretch at even par Wednesday.
As Rescigno began his ascent, the leaders remained relatively stagnant through their front nine. Kansas Jayhawk Harry Hillier and UTSA teammates Adam House and Michael Rome all began the day tied for the lead at four-under and one shot clear of a handful of players at three and two under. As they prodded their way through the front side, it was the two Roadrunners that gained a stroke to move to five-under while Hillier moved to three-under for the championship.
The back nine did not fair much better as House and Hillier remained where they began the day while Rome fell to three under thanks to a double bogey on the par-4 11th. The 11th simply had Rome’s number as he carded doubles all three days of the Gobbler.
While the leaders stayed stagnant, Rescigno picked up a birdie on the par-5 14th and another on the 18th, a hole he tallied bogeys on both previous days.
Following the birdie on 18, Recigno had to wait, but not for long. His 6-under 207 was highlighted with a final round 63 to earn himself the title of being the 2020 Gobbler champion.
Four players tied for second, including Hillier and House at four under. Rome split a sixth-place finish with Hillier’s teammate at Kansas Hank Lierz.
Rescigno becomes the fifth ever champion of the Gobbler as the event began in 2016. He also becomes the first winner from New Mexico State University.
Next year’s tournament will take place the week of Thanksgiving, as is tradition.
