U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Lukas Michel birdied three of the last four holes to win the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Victoria Golf Club.

Michel, who defeated Joseph Deraney in the final match at Colorado Golf Club in 2019 to become the first international winner of the U.S. Mid-Amateur, held off Ryan Thomas of Tasmania by two shots to win the green jacket.

The Women’s Championship leaderboard was close at the turn, with Justice Bosio making four birdies on the front nine to pull within two shots of Lion Higo. She was closely followed by Stephanie Bunque who was able to claim the runner-up at 4 over par. Despite this last-minute charge, Lion was able to make 3 birdies over the last six holes, to pull away from the field and finish at 2 under par.

Higo now plans to head over to Pepperdine University, where the 2020 Men's Master of the Amateurs Champion Sahith Theegala recently completed his studies.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was dramatically scaled-down field in 2021, with minimal international participation and smaller-than-usual fields.

ABOUT THE Master of the Amateurs

The Master of the Amateurs, a 72-hole medal play Championship, has rapidly become one of the elite championships in amateur golf. Like The Masters, the champion receives a Green Jacket. Contestants participate in the first round of the championship with professional golfers in a unique Am-Pro Invitational.

The Master of the Amateurs winner gets an invitation to the Porter Cup in the U.S. Likewise the winners of those two tournaments receive invitations to the next Master of the Amateurs tournament.

A qualifying round (see tournament website for date and handicap requirement) allows three non-exempt players to earn invitations into the prestigious field.
