Dave Bunker overcame a slow start on Sunday to pull away on the back nine and win the Gateway Senior Invitational at The Club at Gateway in Fort Myers, Fla.
Bunker, who turned 55 last year and is starting his first full season as a senior, has a distinguished resume and has long been regarded as one of the top mid-amateurs in Canada. In 2018, he was inducted into the Ontario Hall of Fame, having won 15 provincial championships and topping the mid-amateur points list eight times.
Bunker took a two-shot lead into the final round on the strength of a second-round 68 that put him five under par. First-round leader Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.) was second at three under.
During the final round it quickly became a two-man race, which tightened up when Bunker suffered three straight bogeys starting at the 4th hole. But he wouldn't lose another shot after that, and when he birdied the 14th and 15th holes, he was up by four and cruised home from there.
Bunker finished with a 72 and a 5-under 211 total. Decker (74) was solo second at one under. Brian Keenan (71), Richard Kerper (72) and Rusty Strawn (72) tied for third at two over par.
2014 champion Steve Groom tied for 7th.
In the Super Senior division, Sam Till, Jr. won for the second time in three years, holding off a charging Bob Casamento for a two-shot win at 4-over 220. Duke Delcher and Scott Edwards tied for third, three shots back.
Peter Van Ingen took the Legends division by two shots over Wyatt Meyer and Frank Polizzi, while Walt Martin ran away with the Super Legends division by eight shots.
The Gateway Senior kicks off the AmateurGolf.com Senior Player-of-the-Year points race for 2021. The next points event on the senior schedule is the Heron Creek Senior at Heron Creek G&CC in North Port, Fla. starting January 12.
