The Kansas men's golf team got off to a hot start to their spring season, posting a 14-under 274 at the Classic Club in Palm Springs to take the lead over a 21-team field at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

A day later, the Jayhawks were on their way home to Lawrence.

A Saturday press release from the University read as follows:

"Due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Kansas Men's Golf team, the Jayhawks have withdrawn from the Desert Intercollegiate and will pause all activities at this time. Kansas will not participate during the final two days Saturday and Sunday, and will return to Lawrence following the health and safety protocols set by Kansas Team Health."

With the withdrawal, Georgia Tech (-12) assumed the lead in the tournament.

Freshman Luke Kluver (Norfolk, Neb.) shot a 7-under 65 to take a two shot lead in the individual competition, but with the withdrawal the lead went to Oregon's Tom Gueant at 5 under.

Kansas is scheduled to return to competition on March 8 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic.

UPDATE:

Georgia Tech went on to a wire-to-wire 7-shot victory over Charlotte, with San Diego, Boise State and Oregon rounding out the top five.

A.J. Ott of Colorado State shot rounds of 69-68-68 to take the individual title at 11 under by two shots over Georgia Tech's Noah Norton. The first-round leader Gueant finished tied for 8th at 3 under.
