Pine Needles Invitational Warnquist, Tendall go wire-to-wire

A field of 168 amateur golfers teed off this weekend in the 27th Pine Needles Invitational Golf Tournament held at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
A strong field of amateur golfers competed in two divisions (Open & Senior) over three days on two signature Donald Ross-designed golf courses. The tournament annually attracts a strong field of amateur golfers in one of the most prestigious team events to kick off the tournament season.
The team of Ben Warnquist (Olney, MD) and Connor Tendall (North Potomac, MD) won the OpenDivision won with a score of 65-65-70--200. They led the Open Division wire to wire capturing their first victory as Invitational Champions.
Warnquist is a former Maryland State Amateur champion who was the stroke play medalist at the U.S. Mid-Amateur two years ago. Warnquist and Tendall were college teammates at the University of Maryland.
The 2019 champions, Brett Boner and Stephen Woodard, shot three rounds in the 60s to finish second, three shots back.
In the Senior Division, the team of Michael Teague and Braxton McLennan (both of Charlotte, NC)took the title with a score of 68-66-66--200. They had the lowest Senior Division score in the final round of 66 carding 6 birdies in a difficult modified alternate shot format.
Daniel Neveu and Gary Robinson finished second, three shots behind. The defending champions, Sherrill Britt and Keith Waters, were another two shots back, tied for third with the 2019 winners, Paul Simson and Preston Edmondson.

ABOUT THE
Pine Needles Invitational
54 holes four-ball stroke play championship with
open
and senior (both players ages 50+) divisions. The
first
two rounds are best-ball and the final round is
modified
alternate shot. The field will be cut to the low 48
teams split between both divisions following the
second round. The Consulation Round will be played
at Mid Pines.
