Tom Brandes of Bellevue shot rounds of 67-77-69 to win the 35th Washington Senior Men’s Amateur Championship; while Mark Johnson of Mountlake Terrace fired rounds of 75-72-71 to win the 14th Washington Super Senior Men’s Amateur.
Both 54-hole championships were held this week, September 21-23, at Kitsap Golf & Country Club in Bremerton, Wash., and were conducted by Washington Golf.
Brandes entered the day three shots back, in a tie for second place, and put together an impressive final round to get the win. His final round of 1-under par 69 was the low round of the day.
This marks the fourth year in a row that Brandes has captured the title and it’s his eighth overall. When asked about how it feels to win for the eighth time, Brandes was at a loss for words, “It’s surreal. You win it seven times, and I’m 65. It’s just surreal.”
Finishing in second place was Robert Davies of Bremerton.
In the Super Senior, Johnson, a longtime competitor in WA Golf championships captured his first state title. He entered the final round four shots off the lead and in solo fifth place, but a final round 71, which tied the low round of the day, catapulted him up the leader board into the top spot.
“I’ve been trying to win these events for over 25 years,” said Johnson, “and it took me till the Super Seniors to finally win. It feels awesome.”
Carl Hendrix of Bremerton and Chris Degrazia of Lynnwood finished in a tie for second place in the Super Senior.
