Jack Avrit takes Nipomo Men's Amateur
2022 Nipomo Men's Amateur champion Jack Avrit
Jack Avrit had to leapfrog four players, including a Major League Baseball player, en route to winning the Nipomo Men's Amateur on Sunday at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.
After opening with an even-par round 71 on Saturday, Avrit started the day three strokes behind
Jeff McNeil, a member of the New York Mets who attended Nipomo High School before embarking on a professional baseball career.
Playing on his home course at Monarch Dunes, the Santa Clara University senior carded a bogey-free, final round of 67 to earn a three-stroke victory over
Luke Montoya, a high school student at Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo.
Baron Szeto, a freshman at Cal Poly SLO who won the Alameda Commuters last spring, finished four back at even-par 142 (73-69).
McNeil, a four-year veteran with the Mets who was selected to the 2019 National League All-Star team, shot a final-round 75 to finish tied for fourth at 1-over 143.
