Riding sub-par rounds turned in by Gordon Sargent, Reid Davenport and Cole Sherwood, the Vanderbilt Commodores shot 14-under 270 in the final round of The Prestige to win the team title by 10 strokes over Oregon in blustery conditions on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West.

Texas Tech junior Ludvig Aberg, AmateurGolf.com's Player of the Year, won the individual championship for the second straight year with a 3-under score of 210 (71-69-70), two strokes clear of Oregon State's Carson Barry.

When the second round was completed on Wednesday morning, Vandy found itself in sixth place at 30-over par, but just six strokes behind Texas Tech. The Commodores preceded to shave 41 strokes off their second-round score from Tuesday when play was suspended due to high winds in the Coachella Valley and win the Prestige going away with a 16-over score of 868.

The Commodores final round of 14-under 270 was the lowest round of the tournament by 12 strokes and gave the Dores their first stroke-play victory of the season.

“We just talked about coming out here today and just being excited and really competing to our standards and having a little fun and playing with some freedom,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “The guys just got rolling today.”

Sargent (65), Davenport (66) and Sherwood (68) accounted for Vanderbilt's 14-under round score, while Riedel managed to shoot an even-par 71 in challenging conditions.

Aberg, who is ranked third in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, closed out his third collegiate victory by carding a 1-under 70 in the final round to clip Oregon State's Berry by two strokes. The Swede was 2-over on his round through 12 holes but managed birdies on holes 13, 14 and 17 to win his first outright individual championship. He shared medalist honors at this tournament last year along with the Thunderbird Classic.

Aberg and Barry were the only two players to finish under par for the 54-hole tournament.

Davenport finished third at 1-over 214 while Sherwood earned a fourth-place finish at 2-over 215.

“Reid was solid as a rock out there – he hit 17 greens and putted unbelievable,” Limbaugh said. “Cole Sherwood had a really good week from start to finish. He’s really coming into his own as a player. Then just proud of a freshman like Gordon Sargent to bounce back from a round like (an 83 on Tuesday) and to have the courage and internal fortitude to come out there today and shoot 65 to help lead us to our first win of the year.

“Just a great kickoff to the spring season.”

ABOUT THE

The Prestige is co-hosted by eight time NCAA Champion Stanford University of the Pac 12 Conference and UC Davis of the Big West Conference.

There is a college/am tournament fund raiser the day before the tournament proper begins which is a great way to see first hand how these players (many of whom will go on to PGA Tour careers) go about their business.
