FALLBROOK, Calif. (July 15, 2008)--Bakersfield's Brady Baguio didn't get off to the best start on the second day of the fourth annual amateurgolf.com San Diego County Amateur, spraying his opening drive off the tee at the Golf Club of California in Fallbrook and eventually making bogey. But the former UC Bakersfield golfer pulled things together on the back nine, holing out from the fairway for eagle on the 13th hole and eventually locking up a three stroke victory over a trio of fellow competitors. He finished the two-day tournament Tuesday going 68-71--139, five shots under par.
"I was hitting the ball really well, keeping it in play the whole time and hitting greens, I hit a lot of greens on the back, think I only missed one and had a lot of birdie chances," said Baguio, 22. "The turning point was on 16 when I parred it and (Alejandro) bogeyed it. That put me two up and I knew I just had stay steady from there on."
Baguio entered the day tied for the lead with the tourney's reigning champion, Daniel Wax of Pacific Palisades, after his 4-under opening round at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside, and two strokes ahead of Philippines National Team member Michael Alejandro. The three were playing partners for the final day.
"I try not to watch the other players, just focus on my own game, go out and try to make birdies," said Baguio. "But you can't help but to see what their doing and know where you stand, so that kind of helped me post the round I did today."
Wax, a rising senior at the University of Denver, couldn't find his rhythm early in the day, but knocked his final tee shot of the day to within four feet at the treacherous par-3 18th hole, and made birdie to take a share of second place.
Alejandro stayed close with Baguio for much of the day, but was derailed by a bogey-4 on No. 16, and didn't have enough holes left to make up the deficit. The pair, along with Coronado's Bryan Kiss, finished tied for second at 2-under 142.
In the net division, Matt Romig of Marina Del Rey cruised to a five-shot victory, going 71-74--145 for a net total of 1-over-par. Oceanside's Scott Henrickson was the runner-up at 152.
Full results from the fourth annual amateurgolf.com San Diego County Amateur follow, with the first round played at the El Camino Country Club and the second at the Golf Club of California. Both are par-72's.
