Zach Adams of Charleston won the 91st South Carolina Golf Association Amateur on Sunday with a 9-under par total of 279, which was good for a five-shot victory at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Adams, who will play his collegiate golf at South Carolina starting in the fall, began the final round with a four-shot lead, struggled a bit on the front nine with a 2-over 38, but two birdies and an eagle on his inward nine lifted him to a five-shot victory.
“I got off to a slow start today,” said Adams. “I knew I just had to stay patient and something good would happen. I just tried to trust what I was doing this week and kept on believing that I could do it. This is a pretty amazing feeling. I feel honored to be the State Am Champion and I can’t wait to defend my title next year.”
Adams, who finished fourth in this event last year, carded rounds of 69-70-68-72 for a winning total of 9-under 279.
Nathan Franks of Roebuck, Zachary Reuland of Rock Hill and Carlos Garre of Myrtle Beach each finished tied for second, carding an overall score of 4-under par 284 for the tournament.
