Kamin and Licursi win the John R. Williams Four-Ball at Oak Hill
Dan Licursi (L) and Chris Kamin
Though the elite amateur circuit is comprised mostly of individual tournaments, it also has its share of team competitions. One of the most historic of those is the John R. Williams Four-Ball Championships at esteemed Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY, which annually gathers some of the most highly-accomplished amateur golfers from the United States and Canada.
The Arizona duo of
Chris Kamin and
Danny Licursi teamed to shoot a final round 65 Saturday on Oak Hill's East Course to win the mid-amateur division of the 58th John R. Williams, while Georgians
Bob Royak and
Doug Hanzel combined to win the senior division at 8-under 208.
Bob Royak (L) and Doug Hanzel Kamin, who won the Arizona Stroke Play Championship in April, and Licursi carded rounds of 65-68-65 to post a four-stroke win over Kyle Downey and Brandon Grzywacz, who came in at 8-under (68-67-67) 202.
William Wingerd & Jeff Castle closed with a 68 to finish at 7 under, tied for third with Amory Davis & Chris DeForest. Three teams tied for fifth at 5 under, including 36-hole leaders Shane Heise and Scott Loving.
Chris Ironroad and Tyler Gulliksen, who erased a 5-shot lead on the final day
to win last year's event, couldn't recapture the magic in their title defense and settled for a T30 finish.
Royak and Hanzel, who each has won a U.S. Senior Amateur title, posted an 8-under score of 205 (65-71-69) to win claim the senior title by three strokes over three teams: Jon Lindstrom & Chris Carlson, Steve McPherson & Jerry Gunthorpe, and Rob Cowan & Dave Bunker.
It was the latest four-ball win for the decorated senior amateurs; Royak and Hanzel won the Williams senior title in 2018 and have also won both the Georgia Four-Ball and Georgia Senior Four-Ball together.
Last year's senior champs Wade Sarkis & Jim Scorse did not make the cut in their title defense.
