Led by three golfers in the top-seven, fifth-ranked Stanford shot a 7-under 273 to grab the first-round lead of The Goodwin Presented by Palo Alto Networks on Thursday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Senior Barclay Brown is tied for first with Washington's Bo Peng after bother golfers crafted 4-under rounds of 66 on a cool but dry day in San Francisco. Brown is joined in the top-seven by teammates Karl Villips (t-3; 67) and Michael Thorbjornsen (t-7; 68).
At 7-under, the Cardinal enjoys a two-stroke lead over Oklahoma and are four clear of Georgia Tech heading into second-round action on Friday.
Brown, a former Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team member, shot identical nines of 33 with six birdies on the day to earn a share of first place with Peng, who made three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to offset just one bogey.
Four golfers are just one off the pace at 3-under.
It will be another long day on Friday at TPC Harding Park, as morning and afternoon tee times will be used to accommodate the 28-team field.
