On the day of the 40th anniversary of the first Society of Seniors event which was held at Atlantic City Country Club, the 41st Dale Morey Championship concluded on the South Course at Berkeley Hall Club.

Jack Hall (Savannah, Ga.) dominated all week on his way to a seven-stroke victory over a strong field of age 55 and over senior amateurs in the low country. Hall shot 67 (-5) on day one, the first time he set foot on the South Course and followed his opening act by shooting his age for the first time ever, 65 (-7), in round two. He would take a seven-stroke lead into the final round.

“My wife mentioned something the past couple weeks about shooting my age, and lo and behold I did it, and that’s a very nice takeaway from the tournament,” said Hall. I have procrastinated for 10 years, but I’m now proud to be an SOS member, here on the 40th anniversary of the first event.”

Michael Arasin (Auburn, Ala.) and Doug Hanzel (Savannah, Ga.) tried to apply some pressure on the leader after a double bogey by Hall on No.9. Arasin posted 3-under on the front nine, poised for a run, but could not get enough putts to drop down the stretch. He shot a bogey-free final round of 4-under, 68, for a three-day total of 7-under, 209 to earn Runner-Up honors.

Hanzel matched Arasin’s front nine and also kept a clean card in the final round and posted the low score of the day with a 5-under, 67 to finish alone in third place at 6-under, 210.

In the final round, Hall started off hot again with birdies on the first two holes to state his intentions early. An uncharacteristic double bogey jumped up on No. 9 after some bunker troubles, but he was able to shake it off and finish with three birdies coming home, including a 60-foot putt on No. 16. Hall would finish with 2-under on the day, pushing his three-round total to 14-under par, 202.

Asked about the venue and playing conditions, Hall added, “I thought the greens were running just a perfect speed to make putts. You’re very welcome here, they treat you really well, grab your bags as soon as you pull up, the range is absolutely first-class, and the accommodations were wonderful, I really enjoyed being here.”
