Garrett Cooper ran off a string of four-straight birdies at Snee Farm Golf Club, then parred Nos. 17 and 18 to win the Rice Planters Amateur by a single shot over Bruce Murphy (Univ. of Tennessee) and Yin Ho Yue of the University of Oregon.
It was the third time the tournament saw a new leader at the end of the day, but Cooper's name will get etched on the perpetual trophy as the 2023 champion.
Yu did everything he could to catch Cooper, matching his birdies on Nos. 14, 15, and 16 before giving a shot back with a bogey on the par 3 17th. Still, he put up a birdie on No. 18 to apply the pressure, but Cooper avoided a playoff with his par.
At 10-under for the tournament, the Coastal Carolina University golfer from Chesnee, South Carolina kept the Rice Planters title in his home state.
ROUND TWO SUMMARY
Max DuPree is the new leader at the Rice Planters Amateur.

DuPree has a one-shot lead over three players, including a local player named Will Ovenden that plays out of Snee Farm, and Connor Brown (UNC Greensboro) and Yin Ho Yue (University of Oregon).

ABOUT THE
Rice Planters Amateur
The Rice Planters Amateur was the inspiration of
amateur golfer, Dick Horne. During his first Porter
Cup
at the Niagara Falls Country Club in 1973, Horne
befriended the tournament's chairman Dick Harvey.
Harvey encouraged a receptive Horne to develop his
own southern tournament and, consequently, along
with other Porter Cup officials, shared enough useful
information to get Horne started in the South. The
Rice Planters quickly grew to become one of the top
amateur events in the country.
FORMAT AND ENTRY
INFORMATION
The Rice Planters is played over
54 holes of stroke play. While
entries are
by invitation only, the tournament typically
holds a 90-player qualifier for the final five spots in
the
field.
