BERKELEY, Calif. (August 2, 2008) -- Jay Bayron of the Philippine National golf team has turned professional since winning the 2007 Bay Regional, but his country has a strong contingency of six players in the 2008 field at Tilden Park Golf Course.

One of those players, Anthony Fernando, is on a bit of a hot streak during his team's summer trip, having made the quarterfinals at the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst, then qualifying for the US Amateur, which will be played at the same venue this August. Today, Fernando was nicknamed "Anthony Kim Fernando" by one of the members of his first round group, Randy Haag. That came after a run from hole Nos. 12-15 of birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie that led to a back nine of 31.

The last birdie was a clutch up-and-down from the tall rough to the right on the drivable 15th hole --  the ten foot putt barely trickled over the edge of the cup and Fernando celebrated with a triple fist pump. (Actually, it looks more like he's rolling dice.)

Fernando's final score of 4-under 65 leads the field, and came within two of the course record owned by Ivan Holmes.

Brent Booth of Los Altos fired a 4-under 66 to stand alone in second. His front nine of 32 was sparked by an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole, coming right on the heels of a birdie at the challenging par-3 seventh.

Tied for third at 67 are 7-time champ Randy Haag of Burlingame, and Chris Moreno-Hunt of Berkeley, a recent college grad who knows the breaks at Tilden.

amateurgolf.com - Bridgestone Golf co-leader (with Randy Haag) Chris Marin shot 69 so it will be interesting to see how things shake out on Sunday.

SENIOR DIVISION

John Enright not only leads the Senior Division by 3 after an even-par round of 70, he could make a run for the title with the right day on Sunday. Jim Williams stands 3 back of Enright at 73.

NET DIVISION

Defending Champ Al Richardson of Santa Clara made a statement Saturday with a 65. He'll have company in the final group with Cary Lapidus of Berkeley and John McCurdy of Rancho Murieta both shooting the same number.

TOURNAMENT NOTES

The Bay Regional is celebrating its 70th year as a fixture on the Bay Area golf scene. The past champions list reads like a "who's-who" of Bay Area golf, and prizefighter Joe Louis was even in the field one year.
