Western Amateur Qualifier flips the switch on a big week of golf in Illinois
As Sunday turned to dusk at Sunset Valley Golf Club in Highland Park, Ill. the calendar officially flipped to Western Amateur week. The final seven players for the event were determined by making their way past Sunday’s qualifier and onto the big stage.
The world's third-oldest amateur tournament and one of the pinnacles of competitive golf begins August 1st at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
As exempt players were making their final preparations, the grind was real for 72 amateurs vying for those seven spots. Pierce Grieve of Lake Forest, Ill. and Connor Gdovin of Highland Heights, Ohio both posted 7-under 65s to lead the field. Grieve in particular finished with a bang going eagle-birdie on his final two holes to post a back nine score of 31.
Cameron Huss of Kenosha, Wis. carded a 66 (-6) to finish in solo third place.
Drew Wrightson of Carmel, Ind. and Luke Gutschewski of Elkhorn, Neb. both posted 5-under 67s finishing T4.
Rounding out the seven qualifiers were Ryan Voois of Ladera Ranch, Calif. and Ben Sluzas of Lockport, Ill. Both shot 4-under 68s.
Those seven join the field for the 121st Western Amateur where in 2011 it was last held at North Shore Country Club. The club was founded in 1900 and has been on its current site since 1924. Through the years the Harry S. Colt and Charles H. Alison design has held the 1933 U.S. Open, 1939 U.S. Amateur, and the Encompass Championship on the PGA Tour Champions from 2012 to 2015.
AmateurGolf.com will have coverage for you throughout the week and beginning with the Sweet 16 match play you can catch live action at thewesternamateur.com and on Peacock.
