DALY CITY, Calif. (July 5, 2008)--Patrick Grimes and Mariko Tumangan captured the NCGA Junior Championships Tuesday at Lake Merced.

Grimes, of Palo Alto Hills GC maintained his second-round lead to win the championship by two strokes over the field with a one-under-par 215. The 15-year-old started off the day with some missed putts but after posting 40 on the first nine holes, managed to get it together to fire a 32 on the back side.

“I missed a lot of short putts but I tried not to let it get me down,” commented Grimes after the round. The Menlo HS team player finished runner-up in the Junior Championship last year but this year will add the title to his Trader Joes Junior Championship win at Castlewood earlier in the summer.

Mariko Tumangan of Almaden cleaned up the girls championship with two great rounds of even par, 144. The Presentation HS player posted a triple bogey in each of her rounds but that didn’t stop the accomplished 14-year-old from winning by a seven-stroke margin. Tumangan chipped and putted well both days, even managing an eagle on the par-5 6th hole after hitting a 7-iron into the green and then rolled in the 15-footer.

The America’s Cup team member admitted after her round, “my short game kind of saved me.” Tumangan has her sights set on turning professional after going to college.

Alexandra Groetsema of Palo Alto Hills claimed the runner-up place with seven-over-par 151, while Lisa Copeland of Hidden Valley Lake fired 77-77 to finish in third at 154.

In the boys’ 16-18 flight, Tim Honeycutt of Cold Springs posted a solid round of even-par 72 to finish the tournament in runner-up place overall and champion of his age division.

Quail Lodge’s Dash Lindsell fired the low-round of the day with a three-under-par 69 to bump him up to the runner-up spot at three-over-par 219 for the tournament. Meanwhile, Matthew Seramin of Meadow Club carded a 75 to finish in third-place at six-over-par 222.

In the boys’ 14-15 flight, Paul Smith of Turlock carded a bogey-free back-nine to finish at one-over-par 217 and claim the division championship. Carlos Briones of Metropolitan GL YOC finished a single stroke behind at 226 to nab the runner-up honor, while Jonathan Delosreyes of Antioch GC at Lone Tree finished in third at 14-over-par 230.

Andrej Bevins of TFTGS YOC claimed the boys’ 12-13 flight by two strokes. Bevins fired 77-77 to finish at 10-over-par, while Christopher Petefish of Pleasanton YOC posted a pair of 78s to finish on 12-over-par. Oakhurst’s Nicolo Galetti carded a final-found 78 to finish at 14-over-par in third.
