Kevin Vandenberg is the Plantation Senior champion
Kevin Vandenberg is the 2024 Plantation Senior champion. The man from Pulaski, New York fired 72-74-73 for a five-shot win.
Things were not looking up for Vandenberg after he made a triple bogey on the third hole during the second round. However, he bounced back and chipped away to claw his way back up the leaderboard.
In his third round, Vandenberg opened with a flawless 33 on the front nine. He birdied hole Nos. 1,7, and 9. It was enough to build a big enough lead that he could afford to shoot a 40 coming home.
Paul Royak and Jed Shreve finished in a tie for second place. Royak shot the round of the day with a 71, highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole.
In the super senior flight, Steve Sharpe (Greensboro, NC) shot a 69 to rocket up the leaderboard and win the flight. The round was the best in the flight by three shots. Sharpe opened the tournament shooting 78-75.
A birdie on the 15th hole was the deciding score after runner-up James Starnes (Ft. Myers, Fla) made bogey on 17. Starnes shot a 72 and finished tied with second-round leader David Anthony (Jacksonville. Fla).
Bob Casamento shot 73-75-70 to win the legends flight by two shots. It took a great back nine to overtake Greg Osborne, the leader heading to the final round. Casamento made three birdies en route to a 33 on Plantation’s back nine finished. Osborne finished runner-up after shooting 74 on Friday.
Tom Grady and Don Kuehn started the day tied for the lead and finished tied after 18 holes. They each shot 75 on Friday. Grady took the title in a playoff.
Day Two Recap
Craig Hurlbert (Madison, Miss) shot the round of the day in the Plantation Senior to jump into the lead at one-over par with one round to play. The Plantation Golf and CC put up quite a fight, as Hurlbert’s 71 beat the second-best score in the field by three shots.
A 34 on the front nine was highlighted by four birdies, a double bogey on the fifth spoiled the fun for Hurlbert. After 36 holes
Kevin Vandenberg (Pulaski, NY) was one of the players who shot 74 and he sits one shot behind Hurlbert. After an opening 72, Vandenberg might be kicking himself following the second round because of a triple-bogey eight on the par-5 third. A bogey on the 17th hole was the only other blemish on the card, and he carded birdies on hole Nos. 9 and 16.
First-round leader Bruce Levinson (Jupiter, Fla) slipped to third place after a 76. He is two shots behind Hurlbert. It appears to be a three-horse race. Jed Shreve (+7) is in fourth place.
In the super senior flight, David Anthony (Jacksonville, Fla) bounced back from an opening round 78 with a 71 on Thursday. He made three straight birdies on hole Nos. 3-5. First-round co-leader Robert Kearney is one shot behind and James Starnes is two shots behind. Bill Argus, who also held the lead with Kearney shot another 76 and is three shots behind Anthony heading into the final round.
The legends flight saw Greg Osborne shoot an impressive 72. He sits atop the leaderboard at two-over par. His 72 was three shots better than the second-best score in the flight. That 75 was carded by Bob Casamento who is two shots behind Osborne. Pete Allen, who also shot 75, is a distant third at 10 over.
The super legends will have co-leaders heading into the third round at four-over par. Tom Grady has been consistent, shooting back-to-back 74s. Don Kuehn shot a second-round 78 after an opening 70 had him in the lead. Steve Wilson is lurking three shots back at seven-over par.
