Avondale Amateur: Declan O’ Donovan wins by two shots

20-year-old Declan O’Donovan, a member at the Avondale Golf Club, shot 12-under 272 following rounds of 65-71-66-70 to win the Avondale Amateur by a two-shot margin at his home club in New South Wales, Australia.
Donovan, a winning team member at the 2023 New South Wales Interstate tournament, leveraged his knowledge of the home club, shooting a 5-under 66 in his third round. This performance propelled him into the final round with a comfortable six-shot lead at 11-under 202. Jordan Dull followed closely at 5-under 208 with rounds of 70-72-66. Dull added a final round 2-under 69 to secure a solo third-place finish at 7-under par.
O'Donovan has participated in three tournaments in 2024 and recently secured a T4 finish at the Australian Men’s Amateur Championship with rounds of 70-71-72-65 at Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Bentleigh East, Australia.
Billy Dowling from Queensland, the 36-hole leader at the tournament, carded rounds of 67-68-74-65 to finish as the runner-up at 10-under 274.
Jye Pickin and Will Moody carded identical final-round scores of 7-under 64, achieving the lowest scores in the tournament. Pickin secured a T4 finish at 6-under, while Moody finished T7 at 4-under.
The tournament featured participation from 129 players representing nine other countries, including New Zealand, the UK, France, Ireland, Canada, India, South Africa, Northern Ireland, and Wales. Of these, 74 players successfully made the halfway cut.
The Avondale Amateur is regarded as one of the premier Australian amateur golfing calendar events. It is an elite men's and women's amateur tournament, where men compete for the Avondale Medal, and women compete for the Avondale Bowl.
