MOBILE, Ala. (Sept. 1, 2008)--Cole Moreland topped Auburn teammate Glen Northcutt in the second playoff hole by sinking a 12-foot birdie to win the Labor Day Invitational, which was shortened to two days with the threat of Hurricane Gustav looming.

"This is one of my biggest accomplishments," Moreland told the Alabama Press-Register. "Glen has been the best golfer at Auburn for four years and to beat him is something. I had to play some really good golf to beat him today."

Both golfers finished 36 holes at 6-under 136, then birdied the first playoff hole, No. 10. Northcutt needed birdies on 17 and 18 just to force the playoff.

Northcutt's birdie try on the second playoff hole, No. 18, burned the right edge, while Moreland's was dead-center.

"I really played well," Northcutt told the Press-Register. "I made some big par putts when I needed to and got some birdies to fall. The course really played hard with the wind and rough. The pin placements were much more difficult. You had to keep it in play, and I did that. The only bogey I had was on No. 10 when I hit it in the rough and could barely advance it."

"The first day played easy," said Moreland. "The pin placements were easy and the greens were fast. The second day played a lot tougher and it was definitely more windy. For Glenn to come out and shoot a 67 in those conditions was impressive.

"Glenn and I rode down to Mobile together. I told him the two of us were going to finish at the top and we did. I was glad to see that happen."

Zach Sucher, currently ranked second to U.S. Amateur champ Danny Lee in the amateurgolf.com - Bridgestone Golf Player Rankings, took third at 4-under 140.
