Preston Summerhays leads Arizona State to second straight ASU Thunderbird title

For the second straight season, Preston Summerhays and Arizona State won the Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
Arizona State finished 38-under and won the title by a commanding 28 shots over Oklahoma State and UCLA. Oklahoma State and UCLA finished T2 at 10-under, Arizona finished in solo fourth place at 9-under, and Houston finished in solo fifth place at 8-under.
Arizona State shot rounds of 274-271-269, playing better golf throughout the three rounds and posting two of the three low rounds of the tournament.

Arizona actually held the first-round lead after a 13-under 271 to open the tournament, but a second-round 3-over 287 took them out of the tournament.
Preston Summerhays won the individual title, finishing 12-under and winning by two shots. He carded rounds of 67-66-68. His final round, 3-under 68, consisted of six birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey. After he made a double bogey on No. 10, he fell to 8-under and 1-over for the tournament.
However, from there, he made birdies on holes No. 12, 14, 15, and 16 to get to 12-under and win the tournament with that birdie run on the back nine.
With the win, Summerhays moved up from No. 13 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings to No. 9 and back in the top ten.
His teammate at Arizona State, Ryggs Johnston, finished in solo second place at 10-under after shooting a final-round 5-under 66. Pablo Ereno of UCLA and Wenyi Ding of Arizona State finished T3 at 9-under.
Bastien Amat of New Mexico and Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State finished T5 at 8-under.
