In the first round of the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Tex. on the Korn Ferry Tour,
Frankie Capan III recorded 11 birdies and an eagle to shoot a bogey-free 13-under 58.
Capan becomes the second player to shoot a 58 in competition on the Korn Ferry Tour.
On the par-5 No. 9, Capan only had 171 yards into the green after his drive, and he putt his second shot to six feet to record the eagle. He had a chance to shoot 57 or even a 56 as he was 13-under heading to the par-5 No. 18, but his drive found the fairway bunker, and he settled for an up-and-down par to shoot 13-under 58.
He birdied holes No. 2 through 5 to start 4-under through the first five holes, and the eagle on No. 9 saw him turn at 6-under. On the back nine, Capan birdied holes Nos. 10 through 16 to get to 13-under and then made pars on Nos. 17 and 18 to shoot the 13-under 58.
Capan had a strong amateur career, finishing tenth in the AJGA in the Class of 2018 and qualifying for two U.S. Juniors. He also won the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Pinehurst Resort and won the 2020 Minnesota State Amateur.
He shot a 59 on the last round of state in his senior year, winning the individual top spot by ten strokes. In January 2016, he won the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Open to earn a spot in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open and was the individual 2017 Division III State Champion.
He won the 2016 Minnesota Golf Association Player of the Year, placed Second at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, and earned medalist honors at the 2017 Toyota Junior World Cup.
In college, he won the 2022 Tiger Invitational, finished in the final 32 in the 2022 North & South Amateur, and made the match play portion in the 2022 U.S. Amateur. He finished T10 at the 2022 Northeast Amateur and solo 22nd at the Western Amateur.
