Kathy Hartwiger of Pinehurst, NC, for winning the North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur at Mooresville Golf Course. Hartwiger shot rounds of 75 and 72 for a score of 3-over par. Hartwiger would secure victory on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with second-place finisher Kimbra Benson.

At the beginning of the final round, Hartwiger found herself in a tie for second place and five shots behind Benson. However, Hartwiger rallied when she needed to on the back nine, shooting 1-under par with a crucial birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff. The playoff occurred on the long par-3 10th hole, where Hartwiger put her tee shot 15 feet from the cup. Hartwiger locked up the championship from here, easily making par while Benson made a bogey.

When asked about her mindset heading into the final round five shots behind," Hartwiger said. “I actually had been struggling with my swing, so today my whole goal was to concentrate on my pre-shot routine and commit to the shot. I think that ended up helping me.”

Additionally, accolades to Pat Brogden of Garner, NC, for winning the North Carolina Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. Brogden finished with scores of 72 and 78 to win the championship by three shots over Kathy Binkley.

Brogden was the only player in the field to shoot even-par on the first day, which gave her a one-shot lead over Binkley. The course seemed to play more difficult during the final round, which resulted in higher scores for the entire field. However, due to a tremendous 1-over-par performance on the front nine, Brogden hung in there for the win, making a nice 8-foot putt on 18 to seal the victory.

When asked about the tougher course conditions, Brogden said: “The greens were more difficult today to read, I was having trouble with the speed. I knew I probably didn’t have to go low, so I played a little more defensively than I usually would.”
