Calum Scott earns Silver Medal at Open Championship as low amateur

As Calum Scott walked up the No. 18 fairway to the green and a standing round of applause from the crowd, he couldn't help but get emotional as he could feel the love from his home country.

Scott, a standout at Texas Tech and Scottish player, finished as the Silver Medal award winner and the low amateur after shooting 8-over and finishing T43 in his Open Championship debut. He carded rounds of 71-75-70-76 to get to 8-over.

He is currently ranked No. 14 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings. He recently made the quarterfinals of the British Amateur and finished in solo fourth place in the European Amateur.

Scott joined Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, and 2023 low amateur Christo Lamprecht as Silver Medal award winners. 

Luis Masaveu, Tommy Morrison, and Jacob Skov Olesen all made the cut as well. Skov Olesen and Morrison finished T60 at 11-over, and Masaveu finished in solo 78th place at 18-over.

ROUND TWO RECAP

Amateurs Calum Scott, Luis Masaveu, Tommy Morrison, and Jacob Skov Olesen will play two more rounds at Royal Troon Golf Cub for the 152nd Open Championship after surviving the brutal conditions and making the cut.

Scott leads the way at T38 and 4-over, while Skov Olesen is T54 at 5-over. Masaveu and Morrison are T69 at 6-over, making the cut on the number. Scott has shot rounds of 71-75 to make the top 40.

70 golfers and ties made the cut, which fell at 6-over.

Notable names like Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, Bryson Dechambeau, Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, Min Woo Lee, Tiger Woods, Tommy Fleetwood, and a host of others missed the cut.

ROUND ONE RECAP

After one round of the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland, Calum Scott leads the 12 amateurs after an even par round of 71. 

The Texas Tech standout is T18 and will look to chase the leaders on day two. 

Scott recorded four birdies and four bogeys, including a birdie on No. 18 to close his round.

Scott is currently ranked No. 14 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings. He recently made the quarterfinals of the British Amateur and finished in solo fourth place in the European Amateur.

He is playing in his first Open Championship.

Matthew Dodd-Berry, who earned his spot through final qualifying, also had a great day, shooting 1-over 72 as one of the last groups on the course.

Luis Masaveu is 2-over and T42, and Jamie Montojo is 3-over and T69.

Montojo started his championship with a bang, holing out for an eagle on the first hole from 132 yards out.

The 2024 British Amateur champion Jacob Skov Olesen is currently T96 at 5-over, and British Amateur runner-up Dominic Clemons is T120 at 6-over.

2024 Latin America Amateur champion Santiago De La Fuente is T129 at 7-over, 2024 Africa Amateur champion Altin Van Der Merwe is T138 at 8-over, and Vanderbilt star Gordon Sargent is tied with 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur champion Jasper Stubbs at T145 and 9-over.

According to DataGolf, the cutline has a 15.4 percent of being 4-over, a 35.7 percent chance of being 5-over, and a 32.4 percent chance of being 6-over.
