It was a good day to be named Preston at the 2025 Cabo Collegiate in Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Preston Stout of Oklahoma State and Preston Summerhays of Arizona State each shot opening rounds of 4-under 67 to take a one-shot lead into the second round. Stout recorded seven birdies and three bogeys, including birdies on his first three holes. Summerhays recorded seven birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey. He bogeyed his first hole of the day.

Summerhays is ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.

Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State, Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State, and Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State are T3 at 3-under. Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss, Tyler Weaver of Florida State, Hudson Weibel of Houston, and Jay Leng of Stanford are T6 at 2-under. 16 golfers shot even-par or better in the first round and are within four shots of the lead.

In the team competition, defending champions Arizona State led by five shots after an opening round of 8-under 276. The Sun Devils have three golfers in the top three and four golfers in the top 30.

Oklahoma State is in solo second place at 3-under, and Arkansas is in solo third place at 3-over. Stanford and Ole Miss are T4 at 4-over to round out the top five.

The field is missing the top amateur in the world, Florida State junior Luke Clanton, who is playing the weekend at the PGA Tour's Cognizant Classic. With his made cut, Clanton earned his PGA Tour card through the PGA Tour's Accelerated Program, the same way Sargent did last year.

This tournament has a rich history of individual winners, with Wells Williams and Cole Sherwood of Vanderbilt winning in 2023 and 2022. Sam Bennett, the 2022 U.S. Amateur champion, won in 2021, and two-time major champion and AmateurGolf.com Tour winner Collin Morikawa won in 2018.

PGA Tour member Austin Eckroat won as a member of the Oklahoma State team in 2019.
