Long Beach State rolled to a decisive victory at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, held at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
The Beach fired rounds of 275-276-276—the only team to post three rounds under 280— to finish at 37 under, 14 strokes clear of runner-up Iowa State. According to
Long Beach State Athletics, the 37-under total is the best 54-hole score to par in program history, while the team’s 827 aggregate ranks as the third-lowest overall.
Iowa State opened with a tournament-low 271 but couldn’t keep pace, closing with rounds of 282-288 to finish second at 23 under. San Diego (275-285-283) and Wichita State (282-282-279) tied for third at 21 under, while Kansas rounded out the top five at 18 under following a final-round 277.
Long Beach State led the field with 65 birdies and added two eagles en route to its dominant team victory.
In addition to the team victory, The Beach also claimed the top two individual spots. Charlie Forster won medalist honors with rounds of 67-65-64 to finish at 20 under. His 54-hole total of 196 set a new program record and marked his second win of the season. Forster led the field with 22 birdies.
Teammate Alejandro De Castro finished solo second at 14 under (65-71-66), making 17 birdies over the three rounds. The duo separated from the field, with Kansas’ Will King finishing third at 9 under after steady rounds of 71-68-68.
Jose Ramirez (Wichita State), Jake Wallis (Arkansas State), and Luke Gutschewski (Iowa State) tied for fourth at 8 under.
Long Beach State will take the next few weeks to prepare for the Big West Championships from April 27 - 29 in La Quinta, Calif.
