Final Recap

The 130th Amateur Championship concluded in dramatic fashion at Royal St George’s, as Ethan Fang of the United States edged Gavin Tiernan of Ireland by 1 hole in a pressure-packed final. The match featured wild momentum swings, clutch birdies, and a decisive moment on the final hole.

Tiernan, the 19-year-old Cinderella story from County Louth, kept the match tight with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17, leveling things just as Fang appeared to be pulling away. But the American showed championship mettle on the 36th hole, stiffing his approach to 8 feet and converting the birdie to seal the title.

With the win, Fang earns exemptions into The 152nd Open at Royal Portrush and The 2025 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, as well as the 2025 Masters Tournament, provided he retains amateur status.

The final capped off a dominant week for Fang, who also defeated top-seed and medalist Connor Graham earlier in match play and never trailed over his final 36 holes.

From 288 starters to a champion, the 2025 Amateur Championship will be remembered for its elite golf, international flair, and a sensational finish.

Match Play Rounds of 32 & 16 Recap

The second day of match play at the 130th Amateur Championship featured major upsets, dominant performances, and storylines that set the stage for Friday’s decisive rounds at Royal St George’s.

One of the day’s most dramatic moments came early, as medalist Connor Graham was knocked out in the Round of 32 by Ethan Fang of the United States. Fang, ranked No. 7 in the WAGR, clawed back from 3-down to force extra holes, birdieing the 20th to eliminate the Scottish star. He carried that momentum into the afternoon, cruising past England’s Milan Reed 5 & 4 to secure a quarter-final berth.

France’s Matthis Lefevre continued his steady rise. After surviving a back-and-forth battle against Kris Kim (2 & 1), he delivered a composed 4 & 3 win over Daniel Bennett to reach the last eight. Finland’s Veikka Viskari matched that feat with victories over Laurenz Schiergen (5 & 4) and Rintaro Nakano (3 & 2).

Callixte Alzas ensured two Frenchmen in the quarters by edging Simon Hovdal 2 & 1 then beating Sakke Siltala 4 & 3. Australia’s Billy Dowling produced four birdies and an eagle to dispatch Rodrigo Vasquez 5 & 3 before taking down Filippo Ponzano 3 & 2.

Ireland’s Gavin Tiernan, a pre-qualifier from Royal Cinque Ports, continued a fairy-tale run by outlasting Jarno Tollenaire 2 up and controlling France’s Gaspar Glaudas 3 & 2 to book his spot.

With international flavour aplenty, the stage was set for Friday’s quarter-final action — and now, only four remain.

With reigning champion Jacob Skov Olesen now competing on the DP World Tour, the door is wide open for a new name to emerge. Will a rising British hopeful deliver on home soil? Will another international star rise like Olesen did in 2024?

Royal St George’s Course Overview

Royal St George’s offers a historic and strategic links test, with a traditional out-and-back routing. The front nine circles clockwise, often downwind, while the back nine heads back into prevailing breezes—setting up thrilling momentum swings in match play. The terrain may appear modest with a 2-meter elevation shift, but the subtleties in undulation and firm turf exaggerate every bounce and roll.

From the 1st tee, players face a nerve-testing 178-yard carry to safely reach the fairway, and a severe 348-yard run-out—a daunting opener. Hole 2 introduces cross-bunker patterns starting at 268 yards, forcing careful club selection and placement early on.

The par-3s are standouts, especially the 8th—measuring 183 yards and featuring a back-to-front sloping green with sharp contours and surrounding bunkers. Meanwhile, the 15th, a long par 4, is poised to be a match-play decider with its 233-yard forced carry and tricky fairway bunkering at the 300-yard mark.

With its architectural nuance and unpredictable winds, Royal St George’s remains one of golf’s ultimate examinations—and a worthy host for the 130th Amateur Championship.
