SAN MARTIN, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2009) -- Tanner Makimoto of Roseville paced Stocker Cup qualifiers today at the beautiful CordeValle resort.

Makimoto fired a 1-under 71 on a windy day that tested the skills of everyone and made a card without an "other" score somewhere tough to come by.

Birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and 9 on the front nine allowed Makimoto to turn in 34 and while he gave two strokes back with bogeys at the 15th and 17th (the latter being likely the toughest hole on the course today) he carded a birdie on the par-3 16th and closed with a back nine of 37 after making par at the tricky par-5 closer.

"I haven't played that much competitive golf since playing for Sacramento State," said Makimoto, who qualified for the US Amateur earlier this year. "After not hitting it too well on the range I was glad to turn it around on the course."

Behind Makimoto at 73 was Milas Russell of San Diego - he was pleased to make the Stocker Cup and quickly headed to the airport to board a flight for South Carolina, where he will compete in the USGA Mid-Am.

Chance Gearhardt shot 74 to make it "clean" for the third spot, and Bret Wagar won a sudden death playoff (2nd hole) over Craig Kilcoyne for the final spot. Kilcoyne will be first alternate, and cross his fingers for a last minute spot in the tournament proper, which will be contested October 22-25 at the Preserve Golf Club in Carmel.
