Nathan Smith is SGA Amateur of the Month for October
BIRMINGHAM , Ala. – Nathan Smith, a Pittsburgh 31-year-old investment adviser, has been selected as the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for October. Smith, who was a member of the winning U.S. Walker Cup team a month earlier, won the USGA National Mid-Amateur Championship in October for the second time in his distinguished amateur golf career.
Smith tied for medalist in the medal-play portion of the Mid-Am at Kiawah Island , S.C. , then reeled off six match victories to win the title. In the 36-hole final match, Smith blew away Tim Spitz by a 7 and 6 margin. Smith also had won the Mid-Am in 2003.
Smith was the unanimous selection by the SGA’s blue-ribbon national panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. It was only the third time in the 6-year history of the award that a winner drew all of the panel’s votes.
Other winners this year have been U.S. Amateur champ Byeong-hun An, Peter Uhlein, Morgan Hoffman, Dan Woltman, Cam Tringale, Mike Van Sickle, Matt Hill and Gregor Main. The 107-year-old Southern Golf Association promotes amateur golf in a variety of ways, including the staging of the prestigious Southern Amateur Championship, the 104th edition scheduled next July at storied Shoal Creek CC in Birmingham.
