HOBE SOUND, Fla. (June 6, 2010) – R.J. Nakashian of Palm Beach Gardens, playing the Medalist Golf Club for the first time despite several invitations over the years, was the winner Sunday in the 14th annual Tire Kingdom/Palm Beach County Stroke Play Championship.
Nakashian parred the last 10 holes for 71 to go with an opening round of 70 on Saturday for 141, winning by three strokes. It was his 11th Palm Beach County Golf Association victory dating back to the County Amateur in 2004, including the Stroke Play for the third time, all in even-number years: 2006, 2008 and in ’10.
“I’ve known Buddy (Antonopoulos, director of golf) for a long time and he has invited me up here several times,” Nakashian said, “but I never took advantage of it. It’s a tough course that really wears on you. Every tee shot is tough.”
In 36 holes, Nahashian made nine birdies, six on Saturday, two bogeys each day and a double bogey the first round.
Dean Stokes of Palm Beach Gardens was second, closing with 73-144. Brant Peaper of Tequesta, a rising sophomore at Indiana University, shot the low score of the weekend, a 69 Sunday, to tie for sixth among 96 entries.
“The course was in great shape for all the rain they’ve had the last few days,” said Tommy Belen, PBCGA executive director. “Some of the other courses around here were shut down for part of the weekend, but not here.” It’s the first time the PBCGA has played Medalist.
Next on the PBCGA schedule: June 19-20, Junior-Senior, Abacoa GC, Jupiter, and July 17-18, Nicklaus Junior Championship, PGA National, Champion course, Palm Beach Gardens. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
