CAMLACHIE, Canada, (August 5, 2010) -- The newly crowned champions, who have won only their second title in the last ten years, carded a team total of 427, with a 16-stroke lead ahead of last year’s winners, Team British Columbia. It was a very close finish between the runner-up team, who had a two-day total of 443 and Team Quebec, who settled for third place honours once again with their final score of 444.
“The girls were fired up for this competition as they wanted to bring the title home to Ontario,” said team coach Cathy Sherk. “They felt extremely prepared and had a great group dynamic out there on the course. I’m so proud of them.”
Members of Team Ontario included Brittany Marchard of Orangeville, who is currently sitting in second place in the individual competition with a two-day score of 138 (-4), Delaney Howson of Newmarket, who is tied for fifth with 143 (+1), Augusta James of Bath, who is tied for 10th with 146 (+4) and Vivian Tsui of Markham, who is tied for 13th with 147 (+5).
In the individual competition, Megan Woodland of Victoria, B.C., shot into the lead with an impressive 3-under par 68 in the second round, to bring her two-day score to 137 (-5). Woodland carded two bogeys on the first two holes, but had a flawless finish on the following 16 holes, which included five birdies.
“I was hitting the ball really well again today and I felt really confident out there, said 18-year-old Woodland.
Sitting in third place is Taylor Kim of Surrey, B.C., who carded five birdies and three bogeys to finish with a two-day total of 140 (-2).
Team Canada’s Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Richmond Hill bounced back from her eighth place finish in the first round to take fourth place honours with a two-day score of 141 (-1).
“I feel a lot better today knowing that I got a good round in,” said Bentham. “I played a little smarter, which helped me be more consistent and take away those doubles from yesterday.”
A highlight of today’s round included Elyse Archambault’s solid performance, which enabled her to break Sawmill Creek Golf Resort’s course record. The St-Jean-sur-Richelieu native fired a 66 to put her tied for fifth place after the second round.
