PORTLAND, Ore. (August 15, 2010) -- For Southern California team captain David Myrdahl, the outcome was never in doubt. He knew he was fielding a strong team -- one that many of the college coaches in attendance felt could be a competitive Division I college team.
His strength of his conviction held up to scrutiny as his Southern California team posted an impressive 16-stroke victory over the Oregon I team at the 42nd Hogan Cup Team Matches at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Ore.
Even as first round leader Byron Meth of San Diego, Calif. faltered to a second round 81, the other members of the team stepped up. Taking the reigns and ending up as medalist was Beau Hossler, 14, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., finishing at 3-under par 70-71--141, 2-strokes ahead of fellow teammate Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif. They were the only two players in the 48-person field to post an under par 36-hole total.
Hossler has been proving himself time an again. THis is the third victory in the last month. Currently ranked 67th in the country according to Golfweek and 27th on the AJGA Polo Rankings, he recently took titles at the Stockton Sports Commission Junior Open and the 2010 Trader Joes Junior Championship where five of his six rounds were in the 60s.
Last year, Hossler became the second-youngest golfer - at 14 years, 4 months - to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
With his individual title, he joins an elite list of past champions including Tiger Woods, Bobby
Clampett, Ricky Barnes and Michael Putnam. The Hogan Cup 36-hole team matches pit the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada against each other in a team format with the three lowest scores each day determining the team total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field.
In the 42 year history of the event, Northern California has won 13 times and Southern California
has won 12 times including 5 of the last seven years. Being selected to compete in Hogan Cup matches is an honor that has been bestowed to few individuals, and the excellence of past participants is indicative of the quality of the small, select field. Hogan Cup alumni also include PGA Tour players such as Fred Couples, Scott Simpson, Robert Gamez, Kirk Triplett, and Peter Jacobsen.
The event began in 1969 in commemoration of the vast achievements and contributions to the sport by Eddie Hogan, their long-time head golf professional who served the club from 1939 until his tragic drowning death in 1968. Hogan, an Oregon Amateur champion and PNGA Amateur Champion, was credited for transforming the role of the golf professional, developing what is now considered the standard for the green grass pro shop. Hogan was also dedicated in helping the Oregon Golf Association develop its widely-recognized junior golf program.
