Red-hot Burda leads NCGA Senior

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (April 4, 2011) – Del Rio’s Jeff Burda continued his banner year by establishing a one-stroke lead after one round of the NCGA Senior Championship at Spyglass Hill.
The defending champion carded a one-under 71 that featured three birdies on a picture perfect day; it was the only sub-par round on the day. Since October 1 of last year, the 58-year-old has captured the California State Senior for the third straight year, and made a run to the semifinals of the USGA Senior Amateur. He has a large lead in the race for the Senior Player of the Year Award, an honor he captured in 2008, despite playing in only three events. Burda is seeking his third NCGA Senior Championship.
Dennis Younglove of El Macero is second, one stroke back after an even-par, topsy-turvy 72 that boasted four birdies and a like number of bogeys. A slew of five players sit three back after opening 74s. This group is headlined by four-time NCGA Player of the Year Casey Boyns, making his debut in NCGA senior competition. Boyns, holder of 14 NCGA major titles and two State Amateurs, is seeking to expand an ununprecedented NCGA hardware collection with a win. Five more players sit four back of the leader at three-over 75.
The championship wraps up with the final round at Spyglass Hill tomorrow.
