BANDON, Oregon (May 2, 2011) -- Today at the Two Man Links Championship, David Deberry of got off to the kind of start that would make a player think about retiring his clubs for the day and heading back to the lodge.
Because it simply can't get any better.
Deberry, of Corona, California, jump started the best-ball round of he and partner Chad Clark with a birdie at the opener, a par-3 with an elevated green sitting between a notch of dunes.
The second hole, a downhill par-3 of 166 yards, gives "greenside bunker" new meaning. The right side of the narrow green has one of the largest exposed dunes in play at the four-course resort. (Bringing in sand wasn't a construction issue, trust us.)
Add a light rain and some wind off the Pacific Ocean, and a relatively straightforward shot can be downright scary.
But not for Deberry -- with the pin on the back of the green, he fired a perfect 7-iron straight into the jar for the second ace of his career, and the second ace in the ten year history of this event.
Deberry used a Titleist Pro V1x.
From there, Deberry and Clark posted their second straight 4-under 67 to stand four strokes behind leaders Tim Burke and Robert Miller, also of Southern California.
The Net Division, comprised of teams of brothers, fathers and sons, and friends who reside in different parts of the country, is 24 teams strong this year.
Leading the Senior Division is the team of Chuck Parsons of Ohio and Jeff Newton of Northern California (Pleasanton). They stand at 7-under and hold a commanding ten stroke lead at the halfway point of the event. Two-time defending champions Ben Whipple and Sherman Haggerty are in second place and will attempt to make up some ground on Tuesday in round three.
Erik Hallgrimson and partner Wayne McClintock of Northern California shot 74 from the black tees of Bandon Trails, enough to move them one shot in front of first-time players Scott Pritchett (San Mateo, Calif.) and Eric Bates (Rockford, Illinois) who posted a 76 on their first trip around Bandon Trails.
