Morris and Tallent Fire 61 to Win the Virginia Senior Four-Ball
Pat Tallent
GORDONSVILLE, VA. (May 25, 2011) –– Northern Virginians Bob Morris and Pat Tallent set the course ablaze today with a remarkable 61 to capture Virgina Senior Four-Ball championship by 3 shots over first round co-leaders Tim Kelley (Ashland) and David Partridge (Manakin).
Morris and Tallent were on pace to equal their first round score of 65 by going out in 4 under until they caught fire and birdied every hole on the back except the par-4 10th and the par-3 18th.
Kelly and Partridge had it going hot as well with 6 consecutive birides of their own, but failed to convert on the last four holes to come up short by three strokes.
The victors’ two-day score of 126 marks the lowest 36-hole total in the championship’s history, eclipsing the previous best-ever mark of 128 set by the Jamie Gough-Bill Stout tandem in 2002 at Williamsburg’s Two Rivers Country Club.
Morris-Tallent led after the first round last year at River Creek Club in Leesburg, but shot a final round 71 to finish a stroke out of a playoff. They had one goal in mind after sharing the lead after day one this time around.
“’We weren’t going to let that happen again,” said Morris, 63, who became the first player to hold the Maryland State Golf Association and VSGA Senior Four-Ball titles in the same rotation.
John Cuomo, twice a winner of the VSGA Senior Four-Ball, teamed with Alexandria’s John Whitmore to finish third with a score of 67-66--133.
