Southwestern Amateur: Estrada Leads with 64
EL PASO, TX (June 14, 2011) -- Alex Estrada from Belen, New Mexico, fired a course record tying 64 (-8) to charge into the lead of the 96th Annual Southwestern Amateur Golf Tournament being held on the par 72, 7272 yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas. Alex had an eagle, eight birdies and one double bogey on a day with breezy 10-14 mph NNW winds and temperatures approaching 100.
Logan McCracken from Oklahoma City is two strokes back at 66 (-6) and Tim Madigan from Rio Rancho, New Mexico, is currently alone in third place at 67(-5). Of a starting field of 77 players, 20 players were at even par or better, including El Paso players Andrew Widmar, David Persons and Ross Rotwein.
Round 2 of the 72-hole event starts on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:30 am.

Southwestern Amateur
72-hole stroke play championship for national-level
amateurs with a handicap index of
1.4 or better. After 36 holes, the field will be
cut to the low 36 and ties. The
SWGA Selection Committee will select players
to
compete based upon
exemptions, playing resume and rankings.
The SWGA reserves the right to invite
amateurs of national and international
reputation, as well as other amateurs "of
note", to enter into the tournament.
