Michigan Girls Junior Amateur: Hartigan victorious
EAST LANSING – Kelly Hartigan (Clinton Twp. /Chippewa Valley) won the 33rd Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur at Forest Akers - West Thurday afternoon defeating Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth/Plymouth HS) in 22 holes in the match play final.

"I don't feel like I played exceptionally well but I played solid," said Hartigan. "There is always room for improvement. But I was steady."

Harttigan won most of her matches decisively (6&5, 2 up and 5&4 respectively) but needed four extra holes to secure the championship in her final round.

"The final match was definately the toughest," said Hartigan. "She didn'r spray any shots and she didn't make any mistakes. I wsa 2 up going into 16 and she came all the way back."

Murphy's only mistake came on that 22nd hole when she put her tee shot into a bunker. Hartigan was on the green in two and two putted.

Hartigan was also the stroke play medalist of the tournament after winning a playoff with Emmie Pietila (Brighton/Brighton HS). Hartigan won the playoff with a birdie on the second hole.

"I know that it is unususal to be both the stroke play and match play champion," said Hartigan. "It is a different strategy in match play because you can be more aggressive and really go after shots."

Hartigan plans to attend Grand Valley State and study nursing.
